home_content_061.jpg Facts About Bittersweet Candles – You’ve tried the rest, now try the best! WICKS Recent public attention has focused on the use of lead core wicks.  There are obvious risk factors when it comes to any product that contains lead.  Several regulations were issued after cheaply made and foreign-made candles began the use of lead based wicks.  We support the ban of these wicks due to health hazards.  It is important that you know we use a zinc core wick that is not toxic and approved by the National Candle Association.  The “zinc wire” helps the wick to remain centered and upright to ensure clean and proper burning.  Research demonstrates that zinc wicks are safe and pass the Environmental Protection Agency’s air quality tests.  Candle Fact:  A wick with a wire core burns cleaner because it allows the wick to remain upright to incinerate.  The wick would smolder without the support to keep it out of the cooler part of the flame.  DOUBLE WICKS The Bittersweet Candle Company manufactures double-wicked candles in eight-ounce containers and larger.  This ensures a large wax pool that releases more scent.  It also prevents the accumulation of unused wax.  Double-wicking a candle allows for a cleaner, more even burn each time the candle is lit.  The candle does not burn faster; it causes it to burn more efficiently.    COLOR Every color of candle is as unique as the scent it represents.  Because each candle is hand-poured, sometimes a color may vary slightly a shade darker or lighter.  This only enhances the specialty of the Bittersweet Candle because each candle is hand-made from the heart.  Candle Fact:  All candles will fade if exposed to direct sunlight or extended exposure to light in general. Our company protects the candles with a UV inhibitor to slow this process.

WAX

HARD PARAFFIN WAX Hard wax is used in melts, votives, pillars, and cake candles.  Hard wax is required in these candles so they maintain their form without a container.  All melts and votives should be burned in appropriate containers.  Votives should be burned in containers that fit the size of the votive.    If a container is too large, spillover will occur causing the votive to burn the wick down before evaporating all of the wax.   Candle Fact: Never place pillar, cake, or votive candles directly on a wood surface.  The scent oil can seep into the wood; thus leaving a stain. SOFT PARAFFIN WAX Soft wax is used in all jar containers and tealights due to the wax’s ability to hold and release more scent.  Our soft wax will burn longer and stronger than other waxes due to its low melting point and refined properties.  The soft wax also contains a small amount of soy, to improve the appearance and to make it burn cleaner.  Each candle is created with an over-pour to ensure the candle meets its weight specification.  Because of this, nearly every candle contains more wax than stated.  The company makes sure each customer receives the most for their money.  Candle Fact:  You cannot double or triple scent a candle. It is only possible to add scent until the wax’s saturation point is met.  Generally, a softer wax can hold more scent oil.

SCENT

Each candle scent is uniquely blended with top-grade fragrance oils to ensure a strong, realistic fragrance each time the candle is burned.  The Bittersweet Candle Company offers a large variety of exceptional scents that are constantly evolving and expanding.   Candle Fact:  It is the amount of wax melted that determines the scent throw given by a candle, not the flame.

We DO NOT just sit around and piddle our thumbs all day and have projects “handed” to us on a silver platter!

As crazy as this may sound, it’s true.  As contractors we have to find our own work.  It’s not handed to us on a platter.. we actually have to go out and market ourselves, find clients, do the work, and close the deal.

I read an article today in the local newspaper here.. the title was “Freelancers Have It So Easy”.  It was about how freelancers get projects “handed” to them daily and have all the free time in the world.  Now, I’ve been doing freelance work for about 3 years now and when I first started out I did nothing but market and advertise my services.  You know the whole “sell yourself” thing.  Nothing came easy and I had to fight for the projects I really wanted.  Now, because word of mouth is so powerful, I spend less time marketing and more time working.

I worked in an office before I became an Independent Contractor.  Working freelance I get more work done in a 4 hour day than I did in an 8 hour day at the office.

Myth #1.. We don’t have projects “handed” to us and we don’t have all the free time in the world.
